Film Theory and Criticism
Gareth Jones has a lifelong relationship with Cambridge University and his academic commitment continues.
Graduating from St John’s, Cambridge in 1973 with 1st Class Hons in Modern & Medieval Languages, he returned to his old department of German & Dutch in 2006 to undertake a Ph.D. in Holocaust Film viewed through the optic of Freudian trauma theory. His thesis Rites of Recuperation also calls on his eight years’ experience of Balkan cinema, gained as a script consultant to Sarajevo Film Festival’s Cinelink programme, to provide a secondary corpus.
Having lectured and consulted for many years at film academies and institutions around the world, he has drafted, with his partner Fiona Howe, a manual of film dramaturgy Raising Cain (see link below.)
Rites of Recuperation – Film and the Holocaust in Germany and the Balkans
The Holocaust has been described as a unique, unrepeatable event. While testing this claim on the filmic output of Germany in the post-war years, Gareth Jones’s thesis exposes it to further scrutiny through films of more recent genocide in a region which also suffered from the Holocaust, namely the Balkans.
